Common Cardiology Conditions

Chest pain

Breathlessness

Chest pain is a common symptom that can understandably lead to significant anxiety. While the cause of chest pain may not always be alarming, it can indicate issues such as narrowing of the heart arteries, which can result in a heart attack. A discussion with Dr Hinton will provide immediate insights into the potential cause of these symptoms and whether further investigations are necessary.

There are a range of potential causes of breathlessness, one of which could be heart failure. This condition can be rapidly diagnosed following a discussion with Dr Hinton after which he may request further investigations to confirm the diagnosis. These may include a simple blood test combined with an ultrasound of the heart (echocardiogram). If heart failure is diagnosed, Dr Hinton will ensure that you receive the optimal medication to help manage your condition.

Palpitation

Palpitation is an awareness of your heart beating in an unexpected way. This is a common presentation and often has a cause that is not concerning, though it can be a sign of important heart rhythm abnormalities. After discussing your symptoms with Dr Hinton, it is likely that he will request a heart monitor to confirm his diagnosis.

Dizzy spells and blackouts can be caused by a variety of conditions, some of which may be serious. Dr Hinton will discuss your symptoms to provide an initial diagnosis and determine if further investigations are necessary. Often, the first step is to arrange an ECG and a heart monitor. While some cases of dizzy spells or blackouts can be managed with simple advice and lifestyle modifications, others may require interventions such as a pacemaker or medication.

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is very common, particularly as we get older. In younger patients, it can sometimes be linked to other conditions that may require further investigation. Dr Hinton will assess whether additional tests are necessary and will customise your tablet control to help reduce the risk of long-term complications of high blood pressure, including heart attack or stroke.

Dr Hinton is skilled at assessing future risk of heart disease, utilising the latest risk assessment tools such as QRISK3 and SCORE2. He will work with you to develop strategies to help reduce your risk. Some patients might benefit from a CT coronary angiogram or calcium score to help refine the risk assessment. Dr Hinton is also passionate about supporting individuals who have experienced heart attacks, enabling them to recover to their maximum potential and reduce their risk of a further heart attack.
